A Place Called Home

A place called home where tenderness can flourish,

A place called home, a haven from all harm;

A place called home where children sleep in safety;

Where hurts are healed, a shelter from the storm,

Where peace can find a human habitation;

God grant us all this grace -- a place called home.

(Verse 2)

- Fr. Jan Michael Joncas

We are grateful to Michael Joncas for his permission to use this song as a "theme song" at AUSCP gatherings.

2018 John XXIII Award Recipients

Thanks to the AUSCP members and friends who sent in nominations, there were twelve nominees for this year's John XXIII Award. When the Leadership Team met in Albuquerque recently, they reviewed all of the nominations and selected two individuals to receive the award at the 2018 Assembly in June, one of whom is Fr. John (Jay) Davidson. The second awardee will be featured in the next e-bulletin.

Jay Davidson is the pastor of All Saints Parish in Evansville, Indiana. Jay was nominated by Sr. Joan Miller, a Friend of AUSCP. In nominating him, she said: "He works tirelessly for justice; he pastors his parish in the spirit of Vatican II; he practices collegiality with his staff and any other groups that he organizes."

Jay is one of the Founding Fathers of the AUSCP. At the 2016 Assembly, Jay was the driving force behind a proposal called "Bridges to Laity" which opened the AUSCP up to welcoming lay Friends to the organization. We now have 118 AUSCP Friends.

We thank Jay for his dedicated pastoral work in the spirit of Vatican II and his tremendous influence as a Founding Father/Member of the AUSCP.  Congratulations!

"The Scariest Catholic in America"

The New York Times recently called James Martin, SJ, "The Scariest Catholic in America" because of his book Building a Bridge, published in June of 2017. In his book, Fr. Martin calls on Catholics to show L.G.B.T. people more respect and compassion than many of them have demonstrated in the past. To access the article, click HERE.

Justice for Immigrants: Action Needed to Urge Congress to Protect "Dreamers"

The fate of nearly 1.8 million Dreamers remains uncertain as Congress has yet to reach a bipartisan deal to protect these youth. The latest budget bill did not include protections for Dreamers. Unfortunately, every day that passes without a solution is a day where DACA youth fall out of status and lose their ability to go to school, serve in the military, and work legally.  Click HERE to send a message to your congress persons through Justice for Immigrants.

Fr. Rey Pineda of Atlanta is a DACA recipient. The January 19th edition of The Washington Post carried a story about him. You can access it HERE.

We hope many more will respond before February 16th so that we have a credible pool of people for sending input to the Youth Synod. Thank you!
