SEEING & SEEKING
What you see is what you get. What you seek is also what you get.
We mend and renew the world by strengthening inside ourselves what we seek outside ourselves, and not by demanding it of others or trying to force it on others.
- Richard Rohr

AUSCP Priestly Formation Report Gaining Notice
NCR Online published an article by Dan Morris-Young (Apr. 10) and America Magazine published a Catholic News Service story written by Dennis Sadowski (Apr. 13), regarding the AUSCP Priestly Formation document. The latter article included comments from AUSCP member Ron
Chochol (Archdiocese of St. Louis) who chaired the Working Group on Priestly Formation. The group was formed after the 2017 AUSCP Assembly chose this as a priority issue for this year. The group met twice per month by Zoom throughout the year, facilitated by AUSCP member Marty Marren (Archdiocese of Chicago).
Ron Chochol said, in part, "Over the years, I've gotten more and more concerned of the distance that exists between priests and people." You can access the article in America Magazine HERE.
The NCR article emphasizes the call for seminary training to be based on the pastoral values of Vatican II. To read the article, click HERE.
The report on Priestly Formation was sent to Cardinal Tobin and the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. A response from Cardinal Tobin assured us that the document has been brought to the attention of the working group for the Program of Priestly Formation, Sixth Edition. You can access the full document on the AUSCP webiste: AUSCP - HOME

Catholic Climate Covenant - Earth Day 2018
Today - April 22, 2018 - marks the 48th anniversary of Earth Day. This year Catholic Climate Covenant (CCC) focuses on how our overuse of single-use disposable plastics contributes to what Pope Francis calls “the throwaway culture.” Our use of carbon-producing fuels, our reliance on single-use plastics has a devastating impact on God’s creation.
CCC offers a one-hour program on how we can address, both individually and collectively, the growing problem of single-use plastic. It includes prayers, readings, actions, and a video. You can access the program HERE.
The Earth Day Network also has resources for learning about plastic pollution. Website: https://www.earthday.org/
New Book: After the Diagnosis...a Guide for Living
Fr. Tom Lynch and AUSCP Friend Barbara Mariconda, spark a new conversation about suffering and death in their recently released book, After the Diagnosis...a Guide for Living. In so doing, they instill a new sense of the sacredness inherent in the ordinary brokenness of life. The paradox is that in dying to self we become free to love passionately, live joyfully, forgive endlessly, and die freely. The book takes the reality of dying and death beyond simple acceptance to a place of true transformation. The book is available from
Amazon. More information is available at:
In Memoriam - John F. Hynes
John F. Hynes,* one of the original 27 AUSCP Founding Fathers, died on Wednesday, April 4, in Davenport, IA. We received word through AUSCP member Bob McAleer who said John was his closest friend. He said that poor health kept John from attending recent AUSCP Assemblies, "but he was always
inquisitive about the workings of AUSCP. John had a vibrant mind studying scriptures, theology and many subjects to his later years."
Bob went on to say: " So yes, prayers for John but please keep me in thoughts too, since I am to preach at his funeral and now there will be many empty evenings and an empty chair at my table." Our prayers are with you, Bob.
John's obituary can be found at www.hmdfuneralhome.com
May John rest in God's eternal love.
(*Not to be confused with John M. Hynes of Wilmington, DE)
Nonviolence Presentation by Fr. John Dear
Tiffin, Ohio, where the AUSCP office is located, has launched a campaign to make Tiffin a Nonviolent City. In an effort to promote respect for one another, an invitation was given to students, prisoners, nursing home residents, and others to participate in an art project entitled "Do you see
me?" The artwork was on display at a kickoff event on Friday, April 13th, as Fr. John Dear spoke passionately about the need for personal, interpersonal, and global nonviolence. Recalling the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., he quoted: "The choice is not between violence and nonviolence, but between nonviolence and nonexistence."
Among the almost 200 persons present at the event were six AUSCP members and several Friends. John Dear is pictured here with AUSCP Friend Paulette Schroeder, osf, who co-chairs the Nonviolent Tiffin Campaign with AUSCP Executive Secretary, Jackie Doepker, osf.
