Chuck Tobin (Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph) poses with Richard Rohr (right) at the 2018 Assembly. After one of Richard's presentations, Chuck was approached by someone who thought he was the presenter.

Goals and Resolutions

Eight resolutions were presented at the Assembly. Resolutions give direction to the AUSCP Leadership Team, who will develop  public statements on the issues. A resolution needs approval of at least 67 percent of the members present for passage. All eight resolutions were passed.

The resolutions included: Border separation of families; LGBT ministry; Gospel Non-Violence and Gun Control; Support of Parkland students’ initiative; Better translation of texts for Mass and sacraments; Continued support for exploration of ordaining married men; Just Handling of Church Pension Plans; and the Importance of Dialogue in the Life of the Church.

The three Goals chosen as top priorities for the coming year are: Seminary Formation, White Paper on "Status of Women in the Church" and Climate Change Actions. A goal on Preparation of a White Paper on "Clericalism" also received approval. In addition, affirmation was given for an AUSCP grant request to Catholic Biblical Association, and an opportunity to travel to Rome for the canonizations of Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Working Groups will be formed to implement the goals. If you wish to participate in a Working Group on one of the goals, please notify the office at: office@uscatholicpriests.org.

Working Document for Youth Synod

America Magazine has an excellent article by Junno A. Esteves of CNS on the Youth Synod's Working Document. It quotes a presynod gathering of young people who met at the Vatican March 19-25: Young Catholics “want an authentic church. With this, we would like to express, particularly to the church hierarchy, our request for a transparent, welcoming, honest, attractive, communicative, accessible, joyful and interactive community.”  You can access the article HERE.

Cardinal Dearden Remembrance

One of the great U.S. champions of Vatican II was John Cardinal Dearden of Detroit. He will be remembered on August 1st during An Evening of Prayer and Remembrance on the 30th Anniversary of his death. The service, sponsored by the John Cardinal Dearden Legacy Project, will be held on Wednesday, August 1, from 7-9pm at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, 48115 Schoenherr (north of 21 Mile Road) in Shelby Township, MI 48315. AUSCP Chair Bob Bonnot will be present to represent AUSCP and hopes that many AUSCP Members and Friends from the area will join him in presence and in prayer.
