2019 Assembly

"Remember that the baptized do not define ourselves in relation to the ordained ministry of the Church. Rather the ordained ministry of the church and the sacraments of the Church exist for no other purpose than to serve the priestly life of the baptized."

- Richard Gaillardetz

Toledo AUSCP Members Hold Press Conference

AUSCP members of the Toledo Diocese took the initiative to call for a press conference and issue a statement on Racism in light of recent public attacks on people of color.

The AUSCP Social Justice Subcommittee issued this official statement:
"As followers of Jesus Christ, whose mission was to heal those suffering and free the oppressed, and as followers of a God whose essence is love, and who created all things and all people in His image, and who gifts all extravagantly and equally, we, the Social Justice Committee of the Toledo Chapter of the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests (AUSCP), say “enough!”

We call upon our nation, both civic leaders and citizens, to build a culture of respect for all persons regardless of race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin.

We join our efforts with individuals and groups, both secular and religious, to build a more just and gracious world."

The AUSCP supports and applauds the Toledo group for speaking the truth boldly and publicly.

AUSCP Member Calls for Action from Bishops

AUSCP member Bob Wenz (Cleveland) challenged the U.S. bishops to speak out by sending the following letter:

Dear Cardinal DiNardo,

... Last week I texted Cardinal O'Malley and emailed my ordinary Bishop Perrez, asking them each the same question as I now do you.  When will the U.S. bishops strongly and loudly condemn Mr. Trump's bigotry and racism, both at the border and against anyone who disagrees with him, especially people of color? Issuing a letter that almost no one reads does not cut it. The words and actions of the people in power these days is very reminiscent of Nazi Germany. The church cannot be silent, because then and now silence is complicity. Our former Republican governor Mr. Kasich asked on t.v. this week "where are the preachers who should be challenging this president?" I believe some are afraid of losing parishioners and money.  As Martin Luther King Jr. said:  "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." And yes I know there can be several reasons to be careful, diplomatic, etc. But the church's silence, combined with EWTN as a Trump ally, IS interpreted as agreement with his words and policies. But we were baptized and ordained to be prophets. Please BE SO...Do not be silent!!  Praying for you.      Fr. Bob Wenz

Laudato Si' Carbon Offsets:

Guide for Parish Participation

Many Catholics are motivated to care for God’s wondrous creation and to be responsible stewards of the resources God has given us. And they look to the Church for practical ways that they as Catholics can act together. This is especially true of young people inspired by Pope Francis and Laudato si', his encyclical on “integral ecology,” that is, the mutual well-being of nature and society.

The Laudato si' Carbon Offsets, a project of the Catholic Climate Covenant and the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests, can support a response of your parish community that meets this need.

This online platform can serve as a vehicle for people at your parish to create to a fund to green your facilities, or, alternatively, the parish could decide to use a portion of the funds collected to sponsor a project offsite that similarly achieves the project’s goals.

Please contact Fr. Michael Agliardo, MAgliardo@Jesuits.net, for more information or to participate. (A fuller write-up on this will be sent later to all who receive this newsletter.)

New Insights Into Women's Role in Early Church

New research suggests that women had a greater role in the early church's ministries and liturgies than previously thought and were present at church altars as deacons, priests and even bishops. An article by Sarah MacDonald in NCR online (July13) cites the research of Ally Kateusz, a research associate at Wijngaards Institute for Catholic Research, who recently presented her findings to the International Society of Biblical Literature, drawing on iconography from ancient Christian art.

The Peoples Synod

The American Catholic Council is sponsoring an event called The Peoples Synod, September 27-29, at the Baltimore Convention Center. The event flyer says:

"Join us for this first-ever, history-making event where the People of God build a new paradigm of faith.  As Pope Francis changes systems and structures of the institution, we have the power to change ourselves and our immediate environment to live our faith intentionally."
